Screen Pet Engine Demo
A downloadable game for Windows and macOS
Recommended to use the itch app for the download, no unzipping, auto-updates.
Currently in early beta. You're one of the first people ever to run Screen Pet Engine, thank you for testing it. Some things are rough on purpose, and your feedback literally shapes what ships. Found a bug or have an idea? Join our Discord community
Your desktop, but alive.
Screen Pet Engine drops little animated companions onto your real desktop. They walk along your taskbar, and fall with gravity when you pick them up and let go. Start with the pets that ship in the box, or make your very own.
Turn your art into a living pet.
This isn't just a pet viewer. It's a tiny studio, and perhaps the very first node-based engine for creating virtual pets.
- Import your art: PNGs, GIFs, or sprite sheets. Slice sheets on a grid with smart detection.
- Wire behaviors visually: connect simple nodes (Idle, Walk, Random…) to give your pet a life of its own. No code.
- Watch it come alive: your character, walking around your screen, in minutes.
It stays out of your way.
- Focus Mode: makes every pet click-through, so they never block your work, they just gently dim when your cursor passes.
Pets are cosmetic company, not a resource hog
What's in this beta:
- Behaviors: Start, End, Idle, Walk, Random + always-on drag-and-fall physics
- The full sprite importer + sheet slicer
- Ready-to-run default pets, or build your own from scratch
- macOS + Windows and 5 languages (English, 日本語, Español, 繁體中文, 简体中文)
It's a beta, so heads up.
- Expect the odd rough edge or crash. Please tell me when it happens.
- Things may change between builds as I take in feedback.
- The full release (coming to Steam) adds deeper behaviors, props, and more.
What's Next?
We have exciting features planned for the future:
- More and more nodes to represent specific pet behaviours
- Pets interacting with objects and other pets
- A marketplace for sharing custom pets and objects
- Sound and system event support
Help me out:
- Bugs / weirdness: #bug-reports on Discord
- Ideas + what you'd love to see: same place
- Wishlist on Steam (pending review): the #1 thing that helps me ship this
A little story about me:
I've been in software engineering for many years, but my dream was always to be a full-time creator, so I chose game dev as my first step, quit my job, and dived in last year. I hope to bring people back to the joy of screen pets and help them fall in love with this little world all over again.
I'm still working on the Discord community and engine tutorials, so stay tuned, and please don't hesitate to join the Discord server in the meantime!
